DX Series of Drainage Composites

Drainage plays a critical role in the design and construction of below grade applications. Without proper drainage, groundwater seepage may cause hydrostatic pressure and leakage, resulting in structural damage.

Carthage Mills DX series of drainage composites includes drain boards (also called wall/sheet drains), strip drains, and geonets. While all of the products in this series are used to direct the flow of water, each individual product is created for a specific application(s), some being horizontal and others vertical.


Drain boards (sometimes referred to sheet/wall drains) are made from high compressive strength dimpled cores (perforated or not), which include a variety of attached woven or non-woven filter fabrics that can long-term provide clogging resistance and high flow capability. These products are ideal subsurface filters and are used to provide a consistent drainage medium for in a variety of applications.

Single sided, or non-perforated drain board, directs water to flow away from either a vertical or horizontal surface such as a foundation; whereas a drain board manufactured with perforations (or a punched core) allows for double sided drainage. The double sided drain boards maintain a very high flow rate while providing a higher compressive strength for greater depths.

Strip drains function similarly to the drain boards, however they are manufactured into long narrow strips that provide a complete drainage system in applications such as highways, athletic fields, and around buildings and homes. A couple of primary benefits strip drains provide is that they reduce the overall volume of water as well as the length of time standing water is present when used in a horizontal application. Another benefit is that the use of strip drains eliminate the need for labor and material intensive excavation of large drainage trenches.

Carthage Mills’ DX-1000 strip drain – available in 6”, 12” & 18” widths – is a modular composite drainage and collection system consisting of a 3-dimensional and high-flow drainage core, which is wrapped with a non-woven filter fabric. It is designed to replace a conventional sand or gravel covered pipe drain around building foundations and retaining walls. Soil particles are held back by the filter fabric allowing water to pass through to the drain core. A full array of fittings are available in the system to allow for a fast and easy installation.


Similar to drain boards and strip drains, geonets direct water and provide efficient drainage solutions for a variety of applications. However, the primary difference is that the geonet drainage core has compressive strength that is anywhere from 21% to 669% greater than our heaviest drain board, yet flexible enough to conform to irregular surfaces. This tough yet flexible nature makes geonets the ideal choice for applications with extreme cases of heavy loads and/or heavy vehicular traffic.

Carthage Mills’ Geonets are manufactured with a heavy duty high density polyethylene drainage core that is heat fused to a layer of nonwoven filter fabric. The filter fabric retains soil or sand particles as well as freshly placed concrete or grout, allowing filtered water to pass through to the drainage core. Carthage Mills’ Geonets are available single sided or double sided; single sided consists of a layer of filter fabric on one side only, and double sided would include the filter fabric on both sides.
